GENERAL DESCRIPTION: PennBlue is a versatile, custom blend of Kentucky bluegrass and 20% Ryegrass. It provides a dense, rich looking, plush lawn which stays green throughout the year in most areas of California. It is blue-green in color, with a fine textured, erect leaf blade which looks its best when mowed at heights of 1 1/2 inches or more. The rye seed mixture gives its somewhat lusher appearance in the cooler seasons of the year, and provides more strength and durability than will be found with standard bluegrass lawns. It also has better resistance to shade and disease. It is not recommended for high traffic situations. However, PennBlue has a wide range of adaptability where beauty and aesthetics are the main criteria, in addition to year-round green color.
RECOMMENDED USES: PennBlue is recommended for residential, commercial, and industrial landscape installations which are not subjected to heavy foot traffic. It is one of our most popular sod varieties used for landscaping model homes.
COMPOSITION: PennBlue is blended from select varieties of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass. Specific varieties used may vary, however, due to improved variety research, availability and other factors. PennBlue is grown in a controlled cultural environment, resulting in healthy sod which is virtually free of weeds, disease, and insect infestations.
MEASUREMENTS: PennBlue is harvested by machine to a uniform thickness of 5/8 of an inch, plus or minus 1/4 of an inch, plus top growth. In Southern California, PennBlue measures 15 inches wide and 48 inches long when shipped, and contains five square feet of sod. In Northern California, it measures 18 inches wide and 72 inches long, and contains 9 square feet of sod.
SHIPPING STANDARDS: Prior to harvesting, PennBlue is mowed uniformly to a height of between 1 1/2 to 2 inches for shipment. It is rolled or folded with the soil facing out to protect the grass from damage, and the sod is stacked on pallets. Each pallet contains approximately 500 square feet of sod. PennBlue is shipped sufficiently dry for transportation and handling, yet moist enough to facilitate installation. It should be installed immediately after delivery.
TEMPERATURE TOLERANCE: PennBlue is a cool season turfgrass which thrives in the cool seasons of the year. Although it undergoes normal stress during the extremely hot seasons of the year, it maintains good color and appearance, and is not visibly affected to an extreme if properly watered and maintained. In very hot weather, PennBlue should be kept at the longer height and watered daily, especially when temperatures rise above 85 degrees.
WEAR TOLERANCE: PennBlue should not be installed in heavy traffic situations, but recovers quickly from occasional abuse.
SHADE TOLERANCE: PennBlue prefers a sunny location, but is moderately tolerant to shade. It is more shade tolerant than Dichondra and hybrid bermudas.
COLOR: PennBlue has a deep, rich, blue-green color which remains fairly consistent throughout the year if properly fertilized. Its inherent beauty is the most distinguishing characteristic which sets it apart from the other sod varieties.
SMOG TOLERANCE: PennBlue exhibits normal resistance to smog, and will suffer ill effects only if subjected to extreme smog conditions over prolonged periods of time.
SALT TOLERANCE: PennBlue has fair tolerance to saline soil conditions, and should suffer no ill effects if the soil was properly amended before the sod was installed.
ESTABLISHMENT & MAINTENANCE
WATERING: Newly planted PennBlue should be watered daily and soaked thoroughly for the first 10 to 14 days to avoid drying out, and to enable the root system to penetrate its new soil environment Once the sod has been established, watering frequency may be reduced. Due to varying soil and climate conditions, it is difficult to recommend a definite schedule. However, a deep soaking two or three times per week generally is considered adequate. During the summer months, when temperatures remain consistently high, a daily morning watering may be necessary. In addition, a light, mid-afternoon sprinkling is very beneficial in reducing heat stress.
MOWING: PennBlue should be mowed with a rotary mower with a grass catcher attachment, and the clippings should be removed. It should be mowed at a height of between 1 1/2 to 2 inches, and up to 2 1/2 inches in the summer, depending on individual preference. Never remove more than one-third of the top growth at any one mowing.
FERTILIZATION: To maintain its beauty, dense appearance, and rich color PennBlue requires a consistent, programmed fertilization schedule. In most cases, a good complete fertilizer is required twice a year, with the most beneficial applications being made in the spring and fall. All other fertilizer applications may be made with a straight nitrogen product such as ammonium sulfate. During the spring, fall, and winter months, PennBlue should be fertilized at regular 4-6 week intervals with one pound of actual nitrogen applied to each 1,000 square feet of lawn. During the hot summer months, fertilizer rates should be reduced by at least 50%.
WEED, INSECT AND DISEASE CONTROL:
PennBlue is virtually free of weeds, insects, and disease when it is delivered. However, in some lawn installations, weed and insect infestations may occur from close proximity to neighboring lawns which have these problems. Various cultural practices may be used to reduce these problems. If chemical controls are required, they should be used in accordance with the written instructions provided by the manufacturer.
