GN-1
A Product of Greg Norman
Turf Company

A very dark green, medium-fine textured hybrid bermudagrass, GN-1 provides a low growing, tough and durable turf with 'winter color' characteristics similar to Santa Ana and Tifway grasses. With excellent wear recovery ability, GN-1 provides an excellent sports turf and residential play-turf surface.

SOD SPECIFICATIONS: GN-I HYBRID BERMUDA

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: GN-1 is a dark green, medium-fine textured hybrid bermuda bred in Southern California. It is one of the first hybrid bermudagrasses bred and grown in sod production within California since the introduction of Santa Ana in 1968. A result of seven years of breeding and three generations of crosses from bermudagrasses from Africa, Australia, and the USA, GN-1 also underwent an additional four years of observation in Camarillo, Bakersfield, Hesperia, and Fallbrook California. The result is an outstanding hybrid bermuda grass capable of professional sports turf performance yet manageable for cities, schools, park & recreation districts, and the home owner-hybrid enthusiast.

RECOMMENDED USES: GN-1 is recommended for most residential and commercial turf areas where hybrid bermuda is desired. It is an ideal sports turfgrass with excellent performance for football, soccer, and baseball fields, as well as golf fairways and tees. With lower maintenance requirements than Santa Ana or Tifway grasses, GN-1 is a great alternative where reductions in equipment, man-power, and budgets have reduced overall turf maintenance programs. GN-1 Turf, known as CT-2 in Australia, was used in Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games at Stadium Australia, the Olympic Stadium.

COMPOSITION: GN-1 is grown from high quality stolons which have been propagated in a controlled cultural environment. This results in a high quality, healthy sod that is virtually free of weeds, harmful turf insects, and disease.

MEASUREMENTS: GN-1 is harvested by machine to a uniform thickness of 3/4 of an inch, plus or minus 1/8 inch, plus top growth. GN-1 is shipped as 5 square foot sections of sod measuring 15 inches wide by 48 inches long. 'Big Roll' harvesting is available upon request.

SHIPPING STANDARDS: Prior to harvesting, GN-1 is mowed to a uniform height of approximately 3/4 of an inch. It is folded with the soil facing out to protect the turf from damage, and the sod is stacked on pallets. Each full pallet contains approximately 500 square feet of sod. GN-1 is shipped sufficiently dry for transportation and handling, yet moist enough to facilitate installation. It should be installed immediately after delivery. Shipping pallets are the property of Pacific Sod. Should pallet pickup be required, please make arrangements with the office from which the sod was ordered.

TEMPERATURE TOLERANCE: GN-1 is both heat and drought tolerant, and when properly maintained, can withstand temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

WEAR TOLERANCE: During the growing season, GN-1 aggressive rhizome and stolon growth provide an extremely wear resistant turf that recovers quickly from damage.

SHADE TOLERANCE: GN-1 prefers a full sun location with little or no shade.

COLOR: GN-1 has an exceptionally dark green color during the growing season and with proper maintenance produces little seed head.

DORMANCY: Along Southern California's coastal belt, properly maintained GN-1 exhibits good 'winter color' during mild or moderate winters. Dormancy in inland areas will generally last from late November through mid-March.

SALT TOLERANCE: GN-1 has very good tolerance to saline soil and water conditions found in both coastal and desert areas.

THATCH: Of the commercially available hybrid bermudas, GN-1 produces only a low to moderate amount of thatch and develops less thatch than Santa Ana or the Tifway grasses. Maintenance practices that include a regular mowing schedule during the growing season, a low to moderate fertilization program, and an annual verticutting will help keep thatch under control.

ESTABLISHMENT & MAINTENANCE

WATERING: To avoid drying out and enable the new sod to root down, newly planted GN-1 should be watered daily and kept wet during the first 7-10 days. Once the new sod has rooted into the soil, watering frequency should be reduced. Due to varying soil and climate conditions, it is difficult to recommend a definite watering schedule. However, a deep soaking every 5-7 days is generally adequate during the growing season. Desert environments may require more frequent deep waterings.

MOWING: GN-1 should be mowed weekly during the growing season with a reel mower. Clippings are best removed. It should be mowed to a height of 1/2 to 1 inch. Avoid scalping.

FERTILIZATION: To maintain its beauty, color, and density, GN-1 is best fe tilized during the fall, early winter, and spring using 3/4 pound of nitrogen per application per 1,000 square feet of lawn. Read and follow all instructions regarding fertilizer use and application.

WEED, INSECT AND DISEASE CONTROL: GN-1 is virtually free of weeds, insects, and disease when it is delivered. However, in some installations, weed and insect problems may occur from close proximity to neighboring lawns having these problems. Various cultural practices may be used to reduce these problems. However, should chemical controls be required, they should be used in accordance with the written instructions provided by the manufacturer.
