How To Protect Your Investment
Your Pacific Sod lawn was grown under the careful guidance of the industry's top professionals using the most modern horticultural practices. Remember, your new sod is a living, breathing lawn, and should provide you with years of enjoyment if you take care of it!
Proper irrigation coverage and application rates are of the utmost importance in maintaining a healthy lawn. Almost all brown spots in lawns are directly traceable to the irrigation system, sprinkler coverage or watering schedule.
In the event a brown area appears in your lawn, call your original retailer or contractor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE for recommendations. If they are unable to make suggestions that solve the problem, then call the Pacific Sod office nearest to you. We will make recommendations for correcting your problem. We may, at our discretion, send a representative to look at your lawn. We may ask you to increase your watering time, apply a fungicide or other suggestions to try to solve the problem. You must follow all these recommendations before you can qualify for any replacement sod. You will be instructed where to pick up your sod, or you may have it delivered to your home for a minimum delivery charge. Our guarantee is limited to replacement sod only. Pacific Sod will not be held liable for labor charges, fungicide, herbicide or insecticide treatments or delivery fees or other charges incurred in solving your problem.

IMPORTANT!
INSTALL NEW SOD IMMEDIATELY AND BEGIN WATERING--DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY!
Sod is perishable and must not be allowed to remain on the pallet or in stacks. Proper watering is essential to the establishement of your new sod. During the First Week keep the sod and soil beneath completely soaked--it is almost impossible to overwater during this period. As a general guide, water 3 times a day during this critical first week. Watering times should be approximately 10-15 minutes. These numbers may need to be adjusted in inland valleys during high temperatures. Frequency and length of watering will depend on how warm, how windy and how long it takes the lawn to dry out after watering. During this first week, the goal is to keep the sod and soil moist all the time.
During the Second Week, slowly reduce watering cycles and lengths gradually, allowing the soil to firm. This will also make it possible to mow the grass for the first time by the end of the second week without leaving ruts and indentations ion the sod. After the first mowing, gradually decrease watering to a more normal schedule for your area. If the lawn has significant topgrowth, only remove one-third of the grass blades at any one mowing.
HELPFUL HINTS ON INSTALLATION
The sod you have received from Pacific Earth Resources is the finest that you can possibly purchase! It has been delivered within 24 hours of harvest in full freshness and vigor, free of weeds, insects and disease. But, like any living plant that has been cut out of the ground, put on a truck, driven down the freeway and delivered and replanted at your location, it must now devote its energies to reestablishing itself with new root growth. SOD NEEDS WATER TO DO THIS! Please re-read the watering instructions above.
- Apply a pre-plant Starter Fertilizer on the soil before laying the sod.
- Test and make sure your sprinker system delivers head-to-head coverage so water application is uniform. A majority of sod failures are traceable to improper coverage of the irrigations system or sprinkler head placement.
- Butt ends and edges tightly together. Loose seams dry out quickly. Stagger pieces as though laying bricks.
- Where needed, trim sod with a sturdy, curved bladed utility knife or sod knife.
- Water as you go. After each 200 square feet are laid, spray the newly sodded area with a hose.
- After completing your installation, use a lawn roller half filled with water to roll the new sod. This ensures good contact with the soil and eliminates air pockets that can affect rooting and establishment.
AFTER LAYING YOUR SOD
- Proper watering practices cannot be emphasized enough.
- Stay off the new sod for at least 14 days--this includes pets, too! Footprints or urine spots on new, moist sod may cause permanent problems.
- Mow for the first time after two weeks with the mower set at the highest setting to avoid scalping the new lawn. Never mow off more than one-third of the height of the grass. Mow again in five days if needed.
- Fertilize the grass for the first time after about 6 weeks, and follow a regular maintenance fertilization schedule depending on your fertilizer grade and instructions.
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
BLUE-ISH GRAY AREAS APPEARING IN THE LAWN
These are hot spots, wilted areas that are suffering from lack of water. Soak with a garden hose and check your sprinkler coverage immediately!
SOD NOT ROOTING
Within 10 days your sod should have many roots emerging. If not check your watering cycles. NOTE: Sod planted in shade will only root very slowly, if at all. Most turfgrass sod needs at least 4 to 5 hours of full sun daily to successfully root and become established. Sodding in shady areas is not recommended.
BROWN SPOTS
These can be caused by pets, dry spots, areas that are not rooting properly or fungus. About 95% of the time, when you see a brown spot, it is due to lack of water. Check the soil by pushing a long screwdriver into the soil where the sod is healthy, and also in the center of the brown spots. If it is more difficult to push the screwdriver into the brown spot area, it is simply dry. Soak with a hose, adjust sprinkler coverage immediately and watch the area carefully for a few days.
MUSHROOMS
Don't worry about mushrooms. They will not harm your lawn, and will go away when you decrease your watering cycle after the first two weeks. If you have continued mushroom growth, continue to reduce your watering schedule gradually, making sure the lawn does not suffer from lack of water. When the watering is decreased, the mushrooms will naturally go away.
